The J-Tron

Built in 1993-'94, this instrument is the first "new" mellotron design to actually be prototyped for production since the Mellotron 4-trk (1981). Justin Mayer designed and built the J-Tron with an eye towards combining and improving upon the features of both Chamberlins and Mellotrons that he felt were most successful. The result is a 1/2 in. tape, 16 track format that allows the selection of any four sounds at once with a 49 key range. The tape rewinding mechanism is a modified Chamberlin return roller system that does away with the extra motor required by the Chamberlin M1 and appears to be much more reliable. Justin's machine was featured in the Nov '94 issue of Keyboard Magazine and is now being refined for production. For more information, contact Justin at Bear Creek Recording Studios in Santa Cruz Ca.
